Senior Showcase

Friends, New Work, School on April 28th, 2010 7 Comments

With graduation in close sight, I have been frantically setting up galleries, coordinating portfolio reviews, working on freelance projects, and shooting the (never-ending) collection of friend’s artwork. The busier I am, the more satisfied (and stressed) I feel at the end of the day. Recently, I had the pleasure of being selected for a 6-person faculty reviewed photography show. It featured the exemplary work of seniors Chris Hannant, Kat Ryals, Sarah Toscano, Teng Phour, Alicia Collins and myself. With such a wide range of subject matter and personal style, it was able to attract an even larger crowd to view it on opening night. Oglethorpe Gallery, which for local Savannians represented the work of photographer Jack Leigh (Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil), hosted the SCAD sponsored event and it couldn’t have been a nicer facility. At first I was a little worried about the dimensions of the space since I had four 5-foot wide pieces, but I was able to get a nice little nook in the back corner that suited the work perfectly.

It was a rewarding experience to finally see the images printed large, professionally mounted, and hung on the wall.

**While on the topic of presentation I thought I would warn any people who are thinking about mounting large images to not go the homemade route (trying to save money) and just get them professionally done. I experimented with doing it myself but failed miserably and ended up with 2 demolished prints, wasted hours, and spending more money than I should have. The 40″ x 60″ inkjet prints were ultimately mounted to 3mm Sintra board and float mounted with wooden braces and 2″ x 2″ cleats. However I will save that discussion for another blog post.

Atop this exhibit the SCAD Photo Department also displayed their annual Silver & Ink Show featuring the work of numerous photo students. It was hosted at the River Club building which allowed for a huge reception of several hundred attendees. I must say that it was the best show that they have put on in 4 years as the past few years have been weak from my perspective. My large piece “Virgin Birth” was selected for both the exhibit and publication (which will be released late in May).

Never missing a photo opportunity, Ali was quick to get in this one :-)

It was good to also see my friends and fellow photographers supporting the huge collection of work there.

There was a lot of good work but the piece that stood out the most to me was an image by Kristin Wong. I’m not sure who she is (as I couldn’t find her website) so I thought I would give her some credit here. Sorry for the poor reproduction…

Thanks Mokhtar for the nice words. It is pretty nice that a photographer from Lebanon can see the work of a photographer in the US and vice versa. You have some nice works yourself.

      Best-
      Jim
