As a photographer and digital artist I often have people ask me if my images are real. It’s no secret that I enhance almost every image I use and often composite several images just to create one final piece. To traditionalists and purists who disagree with the heavy handed use of Photoshop, I say look at the history of photography. Prophecy

In large, humans have a need to believe in something bigger, something more meaningful. Such religious connotations often surface to help fill that void and connect us to a higher power. However, with the arrival of the modern society, I feel as though religion and faith have taken on entirely new contexts. These images balance on a thin line between stories of divine spiritual intervention and encounters with the extra-ordinary. It is this dissemination between fact and fiction that has caused much turmoil in our world’s longstanding history. Read more »

Collaboration is the new black… or so they tell me. I’m always excited when opportunities to work with other talented individuals comes along. My photo class teamed up with the advertising copyright class to create a campaign for Office Max. The art directors were told to develop cohesive headlines and body copy for which the photographers would then illustrate. It was nice to have a change of roles because I’ve become so accustomed to creating ads, photographs, and copy all by lonesome self. Something changes when you have another person or a group of individuals working on the same piece. Read more »

This is my latest conceptual ad for Simply Lemonade. The headline is meant to be minimal to reflect the simplicity of the product (after all it’s just lemons, water, and sugar—no preservatives).  I always get excited to shoot food/drinks because after the shoot it’s mine to enjoy… and for those who don’t know me, lemonade (and this one in particular) happens to be my favorite drink of all time. Photographing small objects such as lemons presents a challenge because I’m using high powered strobes that emit light in all direction. Read more »

While it may not come as a surprise to those that know me, I happen to be big technology “geek.” I thank my older brothers for that lovely trait. Ever since the Windows 95 Dell PC my family bought in (you guessed it) ’95, I’ve been hooked. Luckily since than I’ve moved on to bigger and better things-cough*Apple*cough-as that is the way technology rolls. My latest assignment was to create a print ad for the iPod while applying what I know with studio lighting equipment. After 2 long days of tricky lighting situations, broken wires, spilled wine glasses, upset stomach (Mexican food), and digital back failures I was able to finish my piece. Known as the “French (Re)touch,” Christophe is shaking up the advertising world with his amazing talent as a retoucher. Although he is based in France, I was able to get in touch with him recently to talk about his background, his studio, and the future of advertising. I was equally impressed by how fluent his English was considering I couldn’t talk myself out of a cardboard box with French (or any other language for that matter). Read more »

I finally got back in the swing of things down here in Savannah. Week one of winter quarter is already done and I have got so many thoughts running through my head. This quarter I will be producing my photography senior  project, which will be the compilation of all my learning over the past 4 years. This includes all of the images, photographers (past/present), concepts, aesthetics and photo theory that I have witnessed. It truly shaped both the person and photographer that I am today. Considering I had first hand experience on assisting one of the top photographer’s in the industry, I thought I might pass down some information to those considering entering the world of photo assisting…

While it comes at no surprise that the 1st and 2nd assistants to large budget photo shoots are the masters to their trade, I wasn’t able to fully realize the scope of what they handle until now. These people are the movers and shakers in the industry since they have the most influence in hiring other assistants. You NEED to make connections with these people because they will recommend you to other assistants and this will be your primary mode of getting  jobs. With that said, if they think you are motivated than you can almost guarantee repeat work. Read more »
