Jim Lind Exhibition: ”City of Exile”

The SCAD exhibitions department presents “City of Exile,” a photographic exhibition by SCAD alumnus Jim Lind (B.F.A., photography, 2010). Lind’s images depict sparsely populated dark and desolate cinematic scapes wrought with destruction and ruin. As a metaphor for human resilience Lind’s figures emerge from these scenes with physical momentum or are captured in warm, theatrical light suggesting hopefulness, adaptation and perseverance. Sometimes shoots don’t go exactly as you planned and you have to change on the fly. Such was the case with the Marcus Robert’s Trio when they were in town last spring for the Savannah Music Festival. Being the last day of the festival they had a very booked schedule but I was able to squeeze in 5 minutes to shoot their portraits. With a very simple key, fill, and bounce light setup I was able to match their portraits with the environments I had taken a few weeks prior of an idyllic foggy Savannah square. Read more »

When the stars align, the skies open up, and the light is perfect, you better hope that you have your camera on you. Luckily it was at my hip for my Grandmother’s 90th birthday celebration last month in Vermont. Finally I brought my camera with me for a change. While this is a very personal set of photos, I thought I would share with everyone so that you all can see how extraordinary my g-ma’s is and the large family that has stemmed from her. Read more »

There is no better feeling than being employed directly out of school, especially at that slightly “out of reach” studio on the top of your list. Four years at SCAD just to be thrown out into the world to fend for my needy self, and boy could it have been any better of an experience. My collegiate excommunication brought me smack dab in the middle of the New York City photo hub, working for the esteemed Pascal Dangin. For those unfamiliar with him, he is the owner of Box Studios, a “high-end digital photography and retouching studio that services the fashion and fine art industries.” Since 1996 the studio has accrued over 250 clients out of their NYC’s West Village location (not too shabby, huh?) Got sent a copy of the June edition (issue 71) of Advanced Photoshop Magazine. By the time I went to Barnes and Noble to get a few extra copies, they were already on the July issue… go figure. Anyways I thought I would share the initial interview that they did to write the feature. It’s a great article since it gets the perspective of four photographers: Jaroslav Stehlik, James Quantz Jr., Clint Davis, and myself on how we use available software to create imagery. Obviously by the title of the magazine, it has a huge slant on Adobe Photoshop but nonetheless gives some great viewpoints and some interesting techniques. Read more »

I present to you Sara Dale’s senior fashion collection. It is a line of six items inspired by army fatigue, featuring an empowered female heroine. While I’m sure she could go into much more detail about the specifics, I thought I would share the images that I shot for her a few days ago. This shoot was complete with a bulky generator, fog machine, duel-head strobe kit, and of course “instant-sweat” (aka spray bottle with water). I was also finally able to use one of my favorite “secret” locations in Savannah. Too bad it was my last shoot at SCAD. Recently, I happened to photograph several jewelry majors’ collections as well as my favorite fiber major’s work . Since they’re my good friends I figured what better way to showcase their work than with pictures and links. I always told myself that I wished I majored in some sort of craft that involved making things with my hands. Guess I’ll have to put that fantasy on the back burners and live vicariously through the work of my friends. End of the school year, means end of the year photo shoots. Especially as soon-to-be graduates most of my friends are looking to get there fantastic work photographed and in to their portfolio. While others just need good ol’ fashioned head-shots. However the head-shots I took for a few of the fibers girl’s collections apparently weren’t “ol’ fashioned” enough for SCAD’s strict (and boring) portrait regulations. So instead I thought I would post them here with whatever links to their work that I had. With graduation in close sight, I have been frantically setting up galleries, coordinating portfolio reviews, working on freelance projects, and shooting the (never-ending) collection of friend’s artwork. The busier I am, the more satisfied (and stressed) I feel at the end of the day. Recently, I had the pleasure of being selected for a 6-person faculty reviewed photography show. It featured the exemplary work of seniors Chris Hannant, Kat Ryals, Sarah Toscano, Teng Phour, Alicia Collins and myself. Read more »
